Asian Wedding Photography at Hever Castle
A number of factors made this one of our more challenging, yet unique, weddings we’ve shot. It was the first time we’d worked with a rickshaw throughout the entire wedding day.
First time we’ve had a groom on crutches with an ankle injury. And I almost went for a swim in Hever Lake due to a catastrophic near-miss with our Profoto B1’s. For those of you who aren’t photographers, the Profoto B1 is an off-camera flash system. A very expensive one!
To get around the grounds of Hever Castle, Nabila and Ricky added their own little touch by hiring a rickshaw. And I’m not surprised. Hever Castle had a huge landscape and was a beautiful backdrop to work with. From the gorgeous interior of the rooms, to the magnificent Italian gardens and the Loggia fountain by the lake. Which happens to be the location we nearly lost the Profoto B1 unit.
We were shooting the couple portraits with the B1 set up near the edge with the lake right behind me. A Profoto umbrella was attached to the B1 unit. With an assistant holding the stand, we thought we were safe. But my heart skipped a beat when a strong gust of wind caught the umbrella and took it right off into the water. It almost tipped over the B1 unit into the lake too. Luckily we had a good assistant who managed to save the light. Unfortunately the umbrella was a bit too awkward to catch due to its size, so off it went for a swim.
Instinctively, for some strange reason, I was about to jump in and rescue the umbrella. As if it was a small child who fell in and couldn’t swim. Thankfully I came to my senses and decided against it. The umbrella seemed to be doing fine as it was balanced right and just floated away happily.
Of course we couldn’t stop working as there was a wedding to get on with. I just pulled out the backup umbrella and carried on with the shoot. Luckily we were blessed with one of the best venue staff we’ve had the pleasure of working with. They were already going beyond the call of duty, and then topped it by going out of their way to arrange for someone to go out to rescue the umbrella by boat. By then, even the public got involved and managed to retrieve it before the staff got there. Phew! Drama over. That could have gone a lot worse.
We were able to enjoy the rest of the day with our couple and had a lot to look forward to for the reception. There was great entertainment for everyone by the amazing Magic Singh, right after he helped Ricky perform a little magic trick for Nabila.
All in all, it was a very eventful day. We’ve chosen a handful of images to share with you. Hope you enjoy them and give us your feedback in the comments.
We just want to extend a huge thanks to Sadia for her assistance on the day. Friedel and Mateusz from Bugbugs (Rickshaw). And of course Hever Castle staff; Sarah Barratt, Nicki Furgason, Chris Cheers and Jerome Overson. Special mention to Chris for going above and beyond to make things happen during the day. and Jerome for helping carry our equipment bag from one location to the next. That man deserves a raise!
